Settling the new land
Joshua is the first of the historical books. As their new leader, he was responsible for leading the Israelites into the land God promised and dividing it among the twelve tribes. After their first victory at Jericho, they were soundly defeated at Ai. Through that loss, they learned that God was to be respected. The people worshiped and obeyed God as long as Joshua lived.
